Day 2 Saturday Whale watching  excursion to Samana bay

We had heard that the hunchback whales gather to mate every year at Samana bay. And that they arrange Whale watching tours from the Dominican Republic. So this was the change of a lifetime to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures. Aurinkomatkat  arranged this tour  every Saturday so we climbed to a charter bus at 6:10 in the morning. We had breakfast at some open air pick nick restaurant on the way. The bus trip to Samana bay took about 4 hours. We boarded on a catamaran and drove for about an hour before we spotted a fountain of  water where a whale was out haling air. We got a quick view of something dark above the waves before the whale disappeared completely.

So we headed some 5 kilometers further where some other boat had spotted 3 whales. There we lucky to catch a glimpse of a whales tail for 2 times as they dived and everyone was so pleased they gave a round of applauds. Of course everything happened so fast that a photo of the tail was impossible to catch when everyone was standing and jumping around in excitement trying to keep their balance on the deck swinging in the 2 meter waves.

A guy with a video camera was climbing around and filming everyone and everything happening on the boat later on the video was sold on DVD. Party music was played on the loud speakers, the waves where quite big, the crew was serving rum and the sun was shining brightly. It was lucky that everybody got a nausea pill at the beginning. I wonder why the nature preserving people have not reacted to this armada of whale watching safaris disturbing the life of the whales by driving their boats so near to them.
